6-Player Sheepshead Rules

Two ways to play with six people at the table

The 6-Player Challenge

Sheepshead's 32-card deck doesn't divide evenly among 6 players, so there are two common solutions: have the dealer sit out each hand (playing standard 5-player rules), or use modified rules where all 6 players participate with fewer cards each.

Variant 1: Dealer Sits Out

The most common approach — and the simplest

How It Works

  • Six players sit at the table, but only 5 play each hand
  • The dealer shuffles, deals to the other 5 players, then sits out
  • Standard 5-player rules apply (6 cards each, 2-card blind)
  • Deal rotates clockwise, so everyone sits out equally

Advantages

  • • Uses standard 5-player rules everyone knows
  • • Gives players a break to grab drinks, chat, etc.
  • • No rule modifications needed
  • • Ideal for casual home games

Variant 2: All 6 Players Active

For groups who want everyone involved every hand

The Deal

With 6 players and 32 cards, deal 5 cards to each player (30 cards), leaving 2 for the blind:

  1. 1. Deal 2 cards to each player
  2. 2. Place 2 cards face-down (the blind)
  3. 3. Deal 3 more cards to each player

Teams: 2 vs 4

The picker calls a partner using the standard called ace method. This creates:

Picking Team (2)

Picker + Partner need 61+ points

Defending Team (4)

Four defenders need 60+ points

Key Differences from 5-Player

  • • Only 5 cards per hand (not 6)
  • • Only 5 tricks per hand (not 6)
  • • 4 defenders instead of 3 — harder for picker!
  • • Picking requires stronger hands to succeed

6-Player Strategy Tips

For the Picking Team

  • Pick stronger: With 4 defenders, you need more firepower to win
  • Partner is crucial: You're outnumbered 2-to-4, so coordination matters more

For Defenders

  • Numbers advantage: Use your 4-player majority to overwhelm
  • Schmear aggressively: You have more teammates to schmear to

Which Variant Should You Play?

Choose "Dealer Sits" If:

  • ✓ Players want standard 5-player rules
  • ✓ Casual atmosphere with breaks welcome
  • ✓ Mix of experience levels
  • ✓ Longer sessions where rest is good

Choose "All 6 Play" If:

  • ✓ Everyone wants to play every hand
  • ✓ Shorter time available
  • ✓ Players enjoy the different dynamic
  • ✓ Want more challenge for the picker
