Schneider & Schwarz
Bonus scoring for dominating victories
What Are These Terms?
Schneider and Schwarz are German words that describe lopsided victories in Sheepshead. When one team dominates, they earn bonus points.
Schneider = "Tailor"
Losing with 30 or fewer points
Schwarz = "Black"
Taking zero tricks (0 points)
Scoring Thresholds
61-89 points for picker's team
90+ points (opponents get 30 or less)
All 120 points (opponents take 0 tricks)
Note: The exact multipliers vary by house rules. Some tables play Schneider as 1.5x.
Schneider Explained
When Does Schneider Apply?
Schneider thresholds are asymmetric — the picker has to clearly exceed 75% of points to schneider the defenders, but the defenders only need to hold the picker to 25% or less:
- • Picker's team scores 91+ (defenders ≤29) = Defenders are Schneider'd
- • Picker's team scores 30 or fewer (defenders ≥90) = Picker's team is Schneider'd
- • An exact 90 / 30 hand is a regular win — neither side is schneider'd
Example Scenarios
- 91 – 29: Picker wins with Schneider bonus (2x stakes).
- 90 – 30: Regular picker win (1x stakes — close, but no schneider).
- 30 – 90: Picker is schneider'd (loses 2x stakes).
Schwarz Explained
When Does Schwarz Apply?
Schwarz occurs when the losing team takes zero tricks. Not just few points - literally no tricks at all!
- • The winning team takes all 6 tricks
- • Losing team: 0 tricks = 0 points
- • This is rare but devastating!
Why "Schwarz" (Black)?
The German term refers to being "blackened" or shut out completely. Taking no tricks is the ultimate embarrassment - you contributed nothing!
Works Both Ways!
The picker's team can be Schneider'd or Schwarz'd too:
Picker Wins
- 61-89 pts = Normal win
- 90-119 pts = Schneider
- 120 pts (all tricks) = Schwarz
Defenders Win
- 60+ pts = Normal win
- 90-119 pts = Schneider on picker
- 120 pts (all tricks) = Schwarz on picker
Getting Schwarz'd as the picker is especially painful - you picked thinking you'd win and instead lost every single trick!
Strategic Implications
Pushing for Schneider
If you're at 85 points with 2 tricks left, try to reach 90. The bonus is worth the risk!
Avoiding Schneider
If you're losing badly, focus on getting to 31 points. Losing is losing, but Schneider hurts more.
Taking One Trick
If you're getting crushed, winning even ONE trick (even with 0 points) avoids Schwarz!
House Rule Variations
Standard
Schneider = 2x, Schwarz = 3x
Conservative
Schneider = 1.5x, Schwarz = 2x
Aggressive
Schneider = 2x, Schwarz = 4x
No Bonus
Some casual games ignore these bonuses entirely
